Key/Flag Guide

Pre-TSS Keys and Flags in EQ
|
Original guide by Verdandi Snowblood
Updates and newer zones added by Saintsaens
The following is a list of all zones (and specific raids or parts of zones) that require a key or flag of some sort to access. Most of these keys are no longer needed, however, there are a couple that still are used. The ones with strikethrough have been removed and are no longer needed to access the zone (per patch of 4/17/08). The level in ()'s next to the key name is the required level to zone in.
- Table Legend
- Zone it Accesses: the zone the key takes you to, which may be just a different part of the zone you were in
- Key Name: Exact in-game name of the key
- Where it Goes: where the key takes you, and where from if from a different zone
- Keyring: whether the key fits on the /keyring (allowing you to delete the physical key once added to the keyring)
- Tradable: can it be traded from one player to another
- Temp: will the item disappear if you log out for more than half an hour
- Who Passes: does it teleport just you, teleport just your group, teleport your raid, or open an actual door so anyone can pass through
- Other Notes: including identifying information if there are other items with the same name

Blackfeather Roost
In order to get to the final island of Blackfeather, you must complete several quests. They are as follows:
Travel to the First Ledge
Travel to the Harpy Grove
Travel to the Harpy Cliffs
Travel to the Harpy Mesa
Vergalid Mines
To reach the inner Vergalid Mines, you must farm an Arid Indicolite Shard from random trash mobs in the upper mines, then stand near some blue crystals in the room with the door leading to Lower Vergalid and right click the Arid Indicolite Shard. It turns into a Flawless Indicolite Shard, which is your key to inner Vergalid.
Ashengate
East
- Key of Flame is used to open the locked door between the very end of the east wing of Ashengate and the lava pool room in the north.
Some notes on the revamped keying process for Ashengate raiding:
To be able to participate in a raid in Ashengate East, you need to complete around 8-10 (depending on your heroic cha) of the following tasks in order to raise Infiltrators and Traitors of Ashengate faction to ally (you can repeat some once you finish the entire line):
- Pezripisid #1: The Armies of Dyn`leth
- Pezripisid #2: Unchecked Aggression
- Pezripisid #3: Bittersweet Memories
- Pezripisid #4: Violence Begets Violence
- Y`ssuria the Elder #1: The Agony of Uncertainty
- Y`ssuria the Elder #2: The Ecstasy of Relief
- Y`ssuria the Elder #3: The Sanctity of the Scale
- Zhubis #1: Sabotage
- Zhubis #2: Project Disarm
- Zhubis #3: The Weakest Link
If you wish to request the AG east instances for raiding, you must do the following tasks in addition to raising faction from those above:
- Zhubis #4: The Pretender (to enable it, you must have at least kindly faction with "Infiltrators and Traitors of Ashengate". You must have completed Captain Zheren's first four tasks. And you must have completed the Into the Leviathan's Lair 24-player raid task. This flags you to request the AG East raid instance and A Complex Diversion).
- Zhubis #5: A Complex Diversion (to enable it, you must have ally faction with "Infiltrators and Traitors of Ashengate", must have completed the Vergalid's End 54-player raid task, and the solo task The Pretender.
- Ashengate East Event: Stitch (this is one half of the flag to request an Ashengate North instance raid.)
West
To be able to participate in a raid in Ashengate West, you need to complete any 8 of the following tasks in order to raise Scholars of Solusek faction to ally (you can repeat some once you finish the entire line):
- Jenray #1: Children of Flame
- Jenray #2: A Daring Rescue
- Jenray #3: Under Pressure
- Pulizzi #1: Slicing Clay
- Pulizzi #2: A Brim Task
- Pulizzi #3: Dark Guardians of Ashengate
- Zhureni #1: Tidying Up in the Temple
- Zhureni #2: Squeaky Clean
- Zhureni #3: Scrubbing the Statues
- Zhureni #4: Evidence of Corruption
- Zhureni #5: Unmake Solusek's Magic
If you wish to request the AG west instances for raiding, you must do the following tasks in addition to raising faction from those above:
- Jenray #4: Severing the Strings (to enable this, you must have kindly faction with "Scholars of Solusek". You must have completed Captain Zheren's first four tasks and the Into the Leviathan's Lair 24-player raid task. To complete this task, you will need to have both this task and the "Vergalid's End" raid task, as the updates you need here come from that raid instance. This task enables you to request Ghosts from the Past)
- #5: Ghosts from the Past (to enable this, you must have ally faction with "Scholars of Solusek", must have completed the Vergalid's End 54-player raid task, and the solo task Severing the Strings. This task is half of the flag required to request A Complex Diversion)
- Ashengate West Event: Sothgar the Twiceborn (this is one half of the flag to request an Ashengate North instance raid.)
North
In order to participate in an Ashengate North raid, you must have the following:
- Ally faction to AG east
- Ally faction to AG west
- Participated in an Ashengate West raid for Sothgar
- Participated in an Ashengate East raid for Stitch
In order to request an Ashengate North raid, you must do the following in addition to what's listed above:
- Have completed the task A Complex Diversion in conjunction with the Ashengate: East raid instance.
- Have completed the task Ghosts of the Past in conjunction with the Ashengate: West raid instance.
- Have completed the task The path begins with a single step.... You must have completed all of Jenray and Zhubis' task lines to be able to see The Path begins with a single step, even though it is possible to see and complete the above two tasks without having done so.
Frostcrypt
To be able to participate in a Frostcrypt raid, each person will need to reach ally faction with Wraithguard Leadership (easiest way to raise faction is repeating the task Warning Signs about a dozen times, since this can be soloed) and complete Fergarin Bardon I's group and raid tasks. Each requires ally faction with Wraithguard Leadership to request and gives a positive faction hit to everyone involved. The tasks are:
- Intercepted Correspondence (group)
- Lost Letter (group)
- Confession (group)
- Kill Kangur (24 person raid)
- Udengar the Traitor (54 person raid; will need 9 people with Letters of Evidence from Kill Kangur task to do)
- Speak with the King (54 person raid)
The Buried Sea
Katta Castrum
In Katta, there are teleporters to help access this HUGE zone easily. There is a 3 quest task arc to enable these porters. The three quests are:
Kumbaja created a very nice Portal Guide once you are flagged to use them.
Buried Sea
A Palisade Key drops on the Blacksail Folly Island that lets you access the palisade on the island.
Solteris access
In Katta Castrum, not far from where the Guild Portal takes you:
The line starts with Prime Researcher Elnot, hail him, and he'll give you a mini task (A City in Peril line) which sends you to someone else. The first time, you get a ring - Combine Signet Ring. Subsequent mini quests (after successful main quests) upgrade your ring. Only one person in each group needs to do the mini quest to get the main quest.
The quests can be done out of order, doing the A City in Peril line afterwards should sort out the flagging and ring updates. However, you might have to do some running back and forth and hailing.
- Solo Task A: A City in Peril - Speak with Researcher Plik. This one gets you the Combine Signet Ring.
- Group Task 1: Knowledge of Power
- Quest giver: Prime Researcher Elnot
- Zone in is through the regular zone. Clear up to named, play hide and seek. Basically, you need to hide from his seekers, he calls out search patterns, and you can avoid them by hiding in rooms they don't go to for that pattern.
- Reward: Orux and faction
- Solo Task B: A City in Peril - Speak with Researcher Maladoks. Ring gets upgraded to 30hp.
- Group Task 2: Locating the Statue
- Quest giver: Prime Researcher Elnot
- Clear up to a named, kill named, move to the statue.
- Reward: Orux and faction
- Solo Task C: A City in Peril - Deliver the rubbing to the Head Mage. Hand in the Etching you got from Locating the Statue. Ring upgrades to 60hp.
- Solo Task D: A City in Peril - Speak with Tactician Sodut. Ring upgrades to 90hp.
- Group task 3: The Snakes are Hiding Something
- Quest giver: Tactician Sodut
- Zone in by hailing Tactician Sodut and saying a phrase. He's inside the inner ring of the city, just south of the centre by some tents. The quest says it's in Thalassius, but you don't need to go there, just hail. Kill golems outside the temple until you get a letter drop, then shissars inside, until you get their drop.
- Reward: Orux and faction
- Group Task 4: Counter-Attack
- Quest giver: Tactician Sodut
- Zone in by saying a phrase to Tactician Sodut.
- Kill 3 nameds and loot an item from each. These each spawn adds, so you need to burn quickly.
- Reward: Orux and faction
- Group task 5: Confront Emperor Zaarisz
- Quest giver: Tactician Sodut
- Zone in by saying a phrase to Tactician Sodut.
- Kill 5 of a particular type of mob in the temple. Hail the Emperor. Several waves of adds spawn, need to kill those before the Emperor becomes active. Kill him.
- Reward: Orux and faction
- Ring gets upgraded at this point to 165hp. I think this happens even if you haven't done all of the previous A City in Peril line.
- Solo Task E: A City in Peril - Speak to Vizier Zio. Ring upgrades to 195hp.
- Group task 6: Where there's a Will
- Quest giver: Vizier Zio
- Zone in through the regular Zhiza zone (NW in Katta). Clear up to the teleporter. Move close without invis or hiding and without getting detected. A wave of mobs spawns on you on successfully viewing the shissar using the portal, keep going back several times until the quest ends.
- Reward: Orux and faction
- Group Task 7: Slay the Serpent
- Quest giver: Vizier Zio
- Zone in through Zhiza. Go to various points on the map to get quest updates. Kill named.
- Reward: Orux + faction
- Ring upgrades to 225hp.
- Group Task 8: Stop the Ritual
- Quest giver: Vizier Zio
- Kill 4 nameds + empress
- All 5 names are in the same room. This is the toughest one yet. Each loot a piece from the Empress.
- Reward: Orux + faction
- Solo Task F: A City in Peril - Give the items he requested to Elnot. Make sure you do the steps in turn. Ring upgrades to 300hp, and you're Solteris flagged.
Note: I'm not 100% certain about the ring upgrade points - I didn't do the hail quests all at the right time!
Note: Must have missions 1-5 completed in order to zone into 6-8
Secrets of Faydwer
Meldrath's Magestic Mansion
The keying quest for this zone is The Search for the Ultimate Story, given by Gimblefixx in DSH. The actual key is a Clockwork Key, given midway through the quest.
Some notes:
- Required level for task is 75.
- To open the door to see King Ak`Anon, put the key on your cursor and hit U.
- Must bring the Clockwork Seal along any time you need to talk to Warmarshal and Gurtrude in FM and the spy in SHIP.
- Easy way to get to the injured spy in SHIP is by using the clockwork illusion given by the Disrupt the Workshop quest.
- Beza and Zeka's towers have both been nerfed, you cannot lev up the north tower anymore and cut some of the clearing out. Instead, you need to either set up a mage CotH link or fight up as normal. Beza is a tier 2 zone, most mobs hit for about 1.5kish, Zeka is a tier 3 zone and is a significant amount harder than Beza.
- Good info on setting up the key from Bonzz:
- There are 8 teeth
- Put key on cursor and type U to use it (or click door with it)
- Put key in a bag slot (not inside a bag) to change the teeth
- Change teeth by a right click
- Wait 5 secs before right clicking the key again, to change Tooth #2 and so forth for each tooth thereafter.
- Right click before the 5 seconds and you keep changing the same tooth over and over.
- A tooth is either INSERTED or REMOVED.
- You have to go through the series of teeth to get all the way from 1 to 8. If a tooth is correct, and you need to get to the next tooth to change it, simply right click twice (don't wait 5 secs), and the tooth should change twice(essentially setting it back where you want it).
Now -- to figure out the combination (which teeth are inserted or removed) -- do as follows.
- Use the key... it will tell you how many teeth are out of place.
- Change Tooth #1 Only (see above).
- Use key (see above). If the number of teeth out of place went DOWN... tooth #1 is correct in the position it is in now. If the number of teeth out of place went UP... tooth #1 is wrong position as it is in now. You now know if Tooth #1 should be INSERTED or REMOVED.
- Adjust Tooth #1 to right setting, wait 5 seconds and then change Tooth #2.
- Use the key and see how many are out of place again. Like Step 3, you now know which way Tooth #2 should be.
- Adjust Tooth #1 and #2 to correct place and Use key.... rinse and repeat until u zone in.
- Once you can zone into MMM, the rest of the quest is for flagging for raiding.
- Doing the Explore the Mansion subquest is fairly painless. Normal invis will work for the Glass Halls and Oil Fountain rooms (going straight from the FM zone in for 2 rooms will work). To get to the Steam Stage room, go up the left ramp from the FM zone in, to the elevator room. The room you need is 1 floor up, and just to the north of where Geartop spawns. The other two update locations are the room where the Crystallos container is located and the room to the left in the hallway that you pass to get to the Crystallos container room. Both can be obtained by using DA or DA potions.
- The rest of the steps from here out are raid encounters except for Oxidilus the Junk Collector, who is a groupable mob in the NW pit in FM (also known as the Recycler area). All parts are prelootable, but need to be on the step of the quest to combine them and hand them in.
Crystallos, Lair of the Awakened
The following guide was submitted by Kilgaroz:
- To get the task Beyond the Barrier, speak to any of four npcs in Dragonscale Hills: Tonas at 2200, -53; Jashy at 165, 374; Aring at -24, 1815; or Vesiss at 1660, 2280.
- You only have to do the MMM key quest up to the point where you can physically enter the zone. Essences can be collected at any time.
- The ONLY task you must complete task given by any of the above NPCs is Beyond the Barrier and even that doesn't have to be finished for Crystallos access.
- Crystal Bases
- You have to pick up four crystal bases ground spawns that can be picked upany time after you get the BtB quest. The bases are 2- or 3-slot containers, so have a main inventory slot open when you pick them up.
- Clear Crystal Base in Dragonscale Hills at 3920, 2066. None of these mobs are KoS.
- Cloudy Crystal Base in Loping Plains at -108, -2702. This is in one of the Minotaur mines near the zone in from Steamfont. On the map, it looks like a cave system with 5 rooms in it, but this is deceiving. You want the second mine entrance as you descend from the plateau where the Fangbreaker camp is. The minos do not see invis.
- Glowing Crystal Base in Hills of Shade at -322, 489. This drop is near zone in from LP. As you exit the tunnel from zone in, take a left, follow the wall and enter a little valley whose western exit is by the Kirathas village. The drop is in the roughly circular room in the cave system below this valley on the SE portion of the room. There are both living and undead mobs here, so the easiest way to do this is to invis yourself and then have a cleric or paladin cast Invisibility vs. Undead on you (Sun Cloak preferred).
- Light Blue Crystal Base is in MMM at 693, 48. This is the step that requires you to have access to that zone. Best way to get to the area of MMM in which this lies is to go through the Steam Factory. Once in the Steam Factory, invis to the MMM zone in (labeled Majestic Mansion on my map). None of the mobs are SI in my experience. When you zone into MMM, the zin is NOT safe, SI mobs near zin, so be ready to back up in a hurry. Once you're safely in, you can back up a little and be out of the roamers' agro range. If you back up too much, you'll zone back to SF. The drop is in a large rectangular room west of zone in, about 1/3 of the way across the room and directly out from the door. If you want to unclutter your map, find the field on your map window marked Low:. Set this to 80 and press the Height Filter window. There are a ton of mobs between zone in and the drop, so the way I did it was to DA and run for it. Miner is better at this game than I am, so he invised and used the tick timer to sneak past mobs and get his.

- Essences
- There are 10 essences that have to be looted in Dragonscale Hills off of named golems on the eastern side of the zone. These can be looted at any time at all, when you loot them has no bearing on completing the main task, BtB.
- In order to spawn these, someone in the group needs to loot the bases listed above (after getting the Beyond the Barrier task) and return to talk to Tomas, Jashy, Vessis, and Aring. Doing this gets you the subquests:
- Our Lost Brother - A Clear Crystal, - A Cloudy Crystal, - A Glowing Crystal and - A Light Blue Crystal
- Our Lost Brother - A Clear Crystal, - A Cloudy Crystal, - A Glowing Crystal and - A Light Blue Crystal
- Only one person should have these tasks active when you go to kill the golems. There are 10 alcoves off of a path that starts near the Mechanotus cannon, each of these alcoves contains a pool; the golems spawn in these pools and there will be a named drake roaming around near the pool and some static trash spawns. When I did this, we cleared out all the trash to be on the safe side, but this isn't strictly necessary. The bare necessities here are that the named drake be killed, so he won't add during the fight, and people that don't have the Our Lost Brother - A XXX Crystal task should invis into the pool and move to the back side of it. The person that DOES have the Our Lost Brother task should wait til the rest of the unit is situated, invis up and run into the pool, spawning the named. The golems are pretty easy kills, I've done them with Wulfguar and Deurgeran, and I've healed it solo when Deurg was tanking/defensive with just Kilgaroz. As you progress south, the named add tricks, small AEs mostly. On many of them, mobs will spawn outside the pool area, but these can be avoided by fighting in the pool itself. Each golem drops 6 Essences, so if you're doing this for more than 6 toons, you'll want 2 people to have the OLB tasks, and only bring one toon with the task into the pool at a time.

- Combining the Essences
- Once you kill all 10 golems and loot all 10 essences, and have picked up all of the bases, you need to combine the essences. Here's a list of the bases with the Essences that are combined in them. The names may be slightly off, but it's close enough for you to get the job done.

- Each time you pick up a base, you'll get a task update on BtB. Each time you do one of the combines in the base, you'll get a task update. You DO NOT have to do any other sub quest to complete it. Once you have obtained all the bases and done all the combines with the Essences, the task will instruct you to Locate Laiyken. He's an NPC at 1982, -1091 in Dragonscale Hills, in a cave marked in green on my map southwest of the zone in from Steamfont. Hail him and he'll give you a container in which you combine the crystals resulting from the Crystal Base combines. Once you've done this combine, you're Crystallos flagged. Sadly, this doesn't complete the Beyond the Barrier task, you still have to explore Crystallos.

- Exploring Crystallos
- Go down the path that led you to all those wonderful golem fights all the way to the south to enter Crystallos. Once inside, you have to explore each of the four wings of the zone. You'll get a popup once you've hit each spot, but you won't get a task update in green on your task window until you've explored all four. As far as I can tell, the only mobs in the zone that see invised toons are the watchful sentries, big evil eyes that roam around the zone. There aren't many of these, so this task isn't very difficult to complete.
- The next step in BtB requires you to go back to Laiyken, and he sends you out to find the lost crystal of Kerafyrm in MMM.
