Solo gear guide

One of the strengths of the shaman class it its soloing ability. There are a multitude of items in Norrath which can be acquired solo, some of which are very useful indeed. This page lists items which have been soloed by a level 80 non-raiding shaman and assumes the following:

  • The shaman is level 80.
  • The shaman doesn't have access to any raid gear, including Anguish augs.
  • The shaman has a minimum of 250 HPs per slot.
  • The shaman has a minimum of 400 of each resist, unbuffed.
  • The shaman has a full set of defensive AAs and all DPS and mana pres AAs.

Clickies

Everyone likes clicky items! From spells that shamans can't usually cast to healing boosts, extra mana regen and ports, there are literally hundreds of clickies out there. Here's a guide of some of them.

Ports

Home town - spiritstones

All shamans, after reaching level 51, can use a spiritstone or soulstone to return to their home city. They're crafted by potters and take 30 seconds to cast, so they're not something to use in the heat of battle! They're useable from the inventory and many of them mirror the port potions that are available. Look for them in the bazaar.

The list includes:

  • Spiritstone of Everfrost - Barbarians
  • Spiritstone of Cabilis - Iksar
  • Spiritstone of Shar Vahl - Vah Shir
  • Spiritstone of the Banished - Troll, Ogre (takes you to Nek Forest)
  • Spiritstone of the Feerott - Ogre
  • Soulstone of Gukta - Froglok

Overthere - Worker Sledgemallet

Time taken - a few minutes

The easiest port item to quest comes from Overthere. Buy a jade from the jewellery vendor in PoK and then shroud up using an enchanter shroud. Head to Overthere and use your charm ability on an undead foreman, in the evil dockyard. Hand the jade to him before charm breaks, receive the hammer. The port only occurs as a proc but it's still useful if you're miles away and need to visit Kunark for whatever reason. Alla link: The New Worker

Steppes - Necklace of Warportal Fragments

Time taken - a few hours

There is a series of three quests in Steppes which results in a necklace with a clicky port to the war portal in Steppes. It drops you off at an unsafe location and requires small portal fragments to use. (Small portal fragments are sold by the Magus in the Guild Lobby.)

The three quests to complete are:

Kill a single non-summoning mob in Steppes

A simple "grab two groundspawns" quest

Kill golems in Direwind and loot 4 items, then kill kobolds in Icefall and loot 4 items. Finally, kill a L70 named mob in Steppes. The named mob hits for 800s, is rootable and doesn't summon.

Plane of Knowledge - Brick of Knowledge

Time taken - a couple of hours

This was the latest scavenger hunt and involved collecting various trash drops from across the Planes. Currently unavailable, but it'll reappear next March. This item is excellent as it drops you next to the Guild Hall, in the same place as the druid / wizard ports.

Plane of Knowledge - The Binden Concerrantia

Time taken - several hours

Formerly a raid-only option, this is soloable now that the Elemental Planes have been opened up. There are three quests which result in three items, each of which is used to make the next. The drops can be gathered in advance and you can do all the combines at the end if needed. The click puts you near the Halas stone in PoK and consumes a 105pp alchemy item with each use.

The quests are:

Collect 4 items from various Tier 1 planes. Use ghetto tracking in Plane of Disease and Magelo to look up specific mob drops, as the drops only come from a certain type of mob.

Collect another 4 items from Tier 2 planes and the Tower of Sol Ro. This quest took rather less time than the first, YMMV.

Collect fragments of living elements, one from each elemental plane. The fragments drop from mephit mobs, to the north in Fire, along the tunnels in Water and to the south of the zone in Earth. Air is the hardest, as there are only two roaming mephits at the zonein. Trash in air splits (and the resultant mobs are unslowable); they also proc something which drains your mana in no time.

Potions

Potions are available to take you to the same locations as available from Spiritstones; they share the same 30-second cast time. In addition there are potions which can take you to the Twilight Sea on Luclin.

A port to Thurgadin is available via the fourth Coldain Shawl quest. The potion is lore but you can keep making them over and over. More details via Alla.

There are also a couple of instagate potions available, which have the advantage of being unable to collapse. On the downside, they're lore and not that common. They are:

Keep an eye on... Just out of scope of this article is one of Greig's drops, the Attuned Spire Shard. It has a port which takes you to Dreadlands. Easily duo'd, he's just off the radar for non-raiders at prsent.

Mana Regeneration

Extra mana always helps, even if you have an enchanter in the group. There are a number of items and potions which have mana regeneration clicky effects.

Clarity Line

The most common items for Clarity line mana regeneration are the Elixirs of Clarity I to XIII potions, vendor sold and crafted via Alchemy. The current top-end Distillate of Clarity XIII gives 25 mana/tick.

There are other expendible items with Clarity line buffs. Clarifying Spores from Sebilis and Gunthak allow you to cast the Enchanter spell Clarity on yourself or others, as does the No Rent Coin Depicting Innoruuk from Howling Stones. One-shot self-only Clarity line buffs are also found in DoD plants, such as the Manasheen plants in Stoneroot Falls.

Beastlord Line

In the past few months new potions were introduced for Beastlord mana/HP regen buffs. The highest currently available is the Distillate of Spirituality XIII, which gives 12 mana a tick.

Keep an eye on... Top-end shamans will be able to acquire the Shadowed Storm Sphere from the deathtouching Shei Vinitras in Akheva. Her deathtouch does 20K damage, which can be heavily mitigated via spell shield. However, as the item only provides 3 mana/tick and has a 150-point rune attached, it's outclassed by potions.

Necromancer Line

Necromancers have a mana tap line with a group mana buff recourse. In the old days shamans were able to make Elixirs of Greater Concentration, which provided a 3 mana/tick buff in the same spell slot. They can still be found from time to time in the Bazaar but are no longer craftable.

Shield Line

Originally introduced with Luclin, this is another line of stacking mana buffs. The original buff is on an INT caster only shield, with a shaman version coming from an Omens raid (and certainly not soloable!). However, if you have Chaotic Jester available one of the possible summons is:

Bristlebane's Wine 3 mana/tick. It's also one of the few endurance regen buffs in the game. Hint: make an entry on your potion belt for the 'good' wine. That way you'll know instantly whether you have the 'good' or 'bad' wine when it appears - and if it's the bad, destroy it immediately and you'll be in with a chance of getting the 'good' stuff a few seconds later.

Familiar: Icy Gelidran 5 mana/tick. Coming soon to LoN, a familiar which boosts your mana pool and adds mana regen.

Overcap Line

Overcap mana regeneration first appeared with Luclin, with a series of clicky items from raid mobs. As the name suggests, the buffs stack with pretty much anything and at higher levels provide a hefty chunk of extra mana regeneration.

Soloable items include:

Talisman of the Burrower Lunar Whispers - 2 mana/tick, from the Evolved Burrower in Acrylia. The burrower is a perma-rooted mob that spawns as a (combat immune) chrysallis. After a few days it repops as the burrower and can be attacked. The creature is nigh immune to magic, so the strategy is to debuff from afar with Putrid, Malis and a disease slow. Then, with langour running, it's a case of disease / poison DoTs and cougar / panther. The mob hits for 500s and quad-attacks.

Phylactery Soul Clasp - 2 mana/tick, from a quest. The quest involves tradeskills and you'll need all skills around 200 to be successful. You'll also need a number of (droppable) items from former raid mobs scattered across the world. More details in the Alla link, but as the items can all be purchased in the bazaar it's just a case of biding your time. Alternatively, most (if not all) of the items can be soloed.

Direwolf Totem of Spirit Arcane Wolf Familiar - 6 mana/tick, from a quest in Icefall. This item used to be very popular as it also confers a dodge bonus, the only way to get such a thing solo. However, it conflicts with our pet and if you use Spirit Call you'll lose the swarm, pet and the familiar as soon as the first swarm wolf dies / despawns.

Keep an eye on... Girdle of Efficiency Maelin's Methodical Mind - 8 mana/tick, from the MPG Trial of Efficiency. This can probably be soloed already by top-end shamans but it'll be a while before it's within reach of the group-geared soloer.
